Getting started for NDS

Hi,

I'm a Mac user, but I think it would be easier to run Windows and start from there right?

I know that there is a tutorial http://www.coranac.com/tonc/text/ that describes GBA programming but I like to program for my NDS. (I started with PAlib - hold do not blame or delete! It looked pretty easy and fast to use but I ran into some error and my NDS crashes with extensive text writing on the screen using PA commands - and you are right it looks like a bad thing and I know PA is not supported here or anywhere else). So I will try to learn the "good" stuff and to handle the libnds.

Ok, what environment do you suggest? On Windows I do have the MS Express version of Visual C++ 2008 or could install 2010... or are there better editors and environments to make use of? If they are installed, is there a way to debug and test the code other than compiling and copying it over to the NDS?

Would it also be easy to use any environment on a Mac to get started and compile programs?

I will not write games, I will write programs to remote control a DSLR, so I intend to write for Nintendo DS (lite) where I do have two slots and can connect a DIY open camera controller cable to get the DSLR connected to the NDS.

Any advice?

It's just as easy to use a Mac for this - we do provide OSX binaries. Code will compile faster on OSX since there are native unix tools. Personally I use TextMate from http://macromates.com/ as an editor for pretty much all my coding needs. It's not free but it's a really nice editor.

Eventually I hope to be using CodeLite - http://codelite.org/ - as the editor provided with devkitPro toolchains - it's free and cross platform. Currently there are a few modifications I need to make to allow creating templates for use with devkitPro toolchains.

Remote control of a DSLR sounds interesting, is this related to the hdrlabs stuff? I'd actually be really interested in getting their stuff free from PALib and set up with decent source control so people can actually contribute.
